Course description: This is an upper division general education course. Chemical principles will be applied to the description of various problems and processes important to contemporary society. The goal of the course is to provide students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to make sound decisions concerning scientific and technical issues.
Text: John W. Hill and Doris K. Kolb, Chemistry for Changing Times ninth edition, Prentice-Hall, New Jersey, 1998. Additional Materials: The Text's website at http://www.prenhall.com/hillkolb provides a number of tutorial and supplementary materials including multiple choice questions. These questions cover the entire chapter, not necessarily what you are responsible for; so you need to be selective. An Instructor's Resource Manual, containing solutions to all of the problems in the Text, is on reserve in the Library.
WWW : All course announcements, including homework assignments and assigned readings will be posted on the 3070 web site. If you do not know how to get on the internet, contact your instructor.
Homework: Homework will consist of questions selected from the end of each chapter in the Text. Assignments will be found on this site under "Homework". The homework will not be collected. However, it is extremely important that you do the assigned work. Quizzes and exams are based on the lecture material and on the homework questions, and it is very unlikely that you will pass the course without doing the homework.
