INFORMATION FOR
GRADUATION AND FOR FINISHING THE THESIS
 | Application for Graduation: The MS Marine
Science Master Degree Requirements and Graduation
Clearance form needs to be filled out and
returned to me (Pam Roe), along with your
Application for Graduation, very early in the
semester you expect to graduate. (Fill in the
courses you've taken, dates they were taken,
grades for each, and have your other committee
members besides me sign the Degree Requirements
and Graduation Clearance form. The Graduate Program Assistant has a
printout of courses, dates and grades for all
students. I will sign the form when you send it,
along with the Graduation Application to me.)
There are directions concerning the Graduation
Application on the back of the Grad Application
form. Be sure to enclose a check for the Grad
Application, made out to CSU Stanislaus.
Thesis: Follow the instructions in the
CSUS Thesis and Projects Requirements pamphlet
published by the Graduate School Office for the
thesis format. You also need to review the Thesis
Preparation document and follow (most of) the
formatting indicated in the Master's
Degree Program Guidelines for Thesis or Project
published by the Grad School Office. The
hopefully final draft of your thesis must be read
for formatting issues by the Graduate Reader in
the Graduate School Office. This draft should be
turned into the Graduate Reader after your oral
thesis defense, which makes the date of the
defense sometime near the middle of the semester
you expect to graduate. After any formatting
changes indicated as necessary by the Thesis
Reader, all copies of your thesis, on correct
paper, etc. must be turned in to the Graduate
School Office by the deadline for the semester
you wish to graduate. Please call me or the
Graduate School Office for dates required for
thesis reader and for final, unbound thesis
copies to be in the Graduate School Office for
the semester you plan to graduate.
You need to sign up with Graduate Program Assistant (there is
another form!) for the time of your thesis
seminar presentation. Your seminar needs to also
be at a time when I can be at MLML, so check with
me also!
If you don't actually finish your thesis the
semester you expect to, you will need to send in
another Application for Graduation (minus the MS
Marine Science Degree Requirements and Graduation
Clearance form that you only need to send in
once), for the semester you do actually graduate.
Additionally, if you have finished all
coursework, including all Thesis units (MSCI
5990, 4 units required), but haven't finished
your thesis, you will need to register for MSCI 7005, 0 units,
$125, through regular CSU Stanislaus registration
for every semester you are working on your
thesis, through the semester you graduate.

Where to get the forms discussed above: You
should already have the MS Marine Science Master
Degree Requirements and Graduation Clearance form
with the material I sent you early in your master's
career. If not, you can get a copy from me at (209)
667-3484. The Graduation Application and the
abbreviated Thesis and Projects Requirements pamphlet
can be obtained from the Graduate School Office at
(209) 667-3129 or from me. A hard copy of the
Master's Degree Program Guidelines for Thesis or
Project are in the MLML library, as well as on the
Web (see above). The form for scheduling the time of
your thesis defense is in Donna Kline's office at
MLML.
I think that's everything, except that finishing a
thesis typically takes about three times longer than
you could ever imagine it would take, so give
yourself plenty of time and be reasonable with
yourself. I want to see at least a couple drafts of
your thesis, and I will help you as much as I can
throughout your finishing-up time, so give me a call
whenever you need help or have a question about
anything in the above statements that doesn't make
sense. My number is (209) 667-3484. It will also help
if you let me know you are beginning the countdown to
graduation when you first start writing your thesis.
